David has a broad range of legal skills and a strategic business focus, gained through the practice of law in a variety of settings. His background prior to joining Kenlan, Schweibert, Facey & Goss included more than a decade at large international legal firms and midsize regional firms in the Northeast and his own solo practice; and five years as Associate General Counsel at Casella Waste Systems, Inc.
In private practice, David has counseled a diverse roster of clients in a wide variety of domestic and international transactional, regulatory, and litigation matters. He has provided environmental risk review and permitting advice and zoning and land use counsel; has conducted due diligence and managed environmental investigation; has negotiated and drafted complex contracts; and has provided litigation support. He also worked on a variety of site remediation and brownfield redevelopment projects.
At Casella, David worked extensively with operations managers throughout the company, handling contract negotiation and drafting for large-scale municipal operating agreements, acquisitions and divestitures, customer and vendor relationships, and development projects. He oversaw multiple litigation matters and provided legal support for the company's EH&S risk management, compliance, and enforcement function from Bangor to Buffalo. As Casella's lead internal counsel for environmental project development, he managed the transactional, permitting, and interconnection components of three landfill-gas-to-energy facilities in New York and Massachusetts, two landfill gas pipeline projects in Delaware and Maine, and a groundbreaking agricultural/commercial anaerobic digester project in Massachusetts. His experience in the renewable energy sector at Casella provided a backdrop for current clients who are developing solar projects throughout Vermont. He also worked with the company's transportation group to develop rail options for solid waste disposal.
As a solo practitioner, David also developed a successful family law practice, providing sensitive, cost-effective counsel to individuals navigating the emotional and financial challenges arising from divorce, property distribution, child support, and custody proceedings in Vermont and New York.
David resides in Orwell with his wife, Claire, and their two children, Catherine and Nicholas. David is a Firefighter I, Chairman of the Town of Orwell Volunteer Fire Department, and soccer coach for the Orwell-Benson Coyotes. He is also one of the founders of the Gatumba Refugees Survivors Foundation, Inc., an organization dedicated to supporting the primarily Congolese survivors of the 2004 massacre of 167 civilians at the UN's Gatumba refugee camp in Burundi, Africa. David enjoys all outdoor activities year-round and has developed a passion for the growing sport of obstacle racing.
